Remote Sensing (RS) & Geographical Information System (GIS) Cell

Ecological Education The Foundation has a fully equipped (with latest hardware and software) Remote Sensing and GIS cell for all kinds of mapping work and remote sensing studies using satellite data. The mapping of forest density, Tree cover, Land use / Land cover, Wildlife Habitat, Wetland, forest fire etc. is done by the RS and GIS cell. The GEER Foundation has generated valuable inputs for the working/ management plans of the forest divisions/national parks and sanctuaries. The inputs generated are also useful for field officers for carrying out various forestry operations. The cell also provides scientific inputs for the ecological and climate change related research and EIA study.

3.LABORATORY

Rates for Research and Analytical testing and other Sophisticated Instruments for scientific testing.

For the capacity building of GEER Foundation, under the Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) Project, (1) An Ecological Research and Monitoring Laboratory at GEER Foundation, Indroda Nature Park, Gandhinagar and (2) Five Field Stations (Jamnagar (Theba), Mandvi, Surat, Mangrol and Bhavnagar) had been sanctioned by the World Bank. These Field Stations & Laboratory at GEER Foundation will facilitate coordination and easy access to the important sites for the project as well as future research projects to be under taken by the GEER Foundation.

The Ecological Research and Monitoring Laboratory was established with sophisticated instruments and equipments such as Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fluorescent Microscope, PCR and Electrophoresis, High Performance Liquid Chromatograph, Total Organic Carbon (TOC) Analyser, Mercury Analyser, Water Purification System, Ultra Micro-balance, Gas Chromatograph, Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy and Heavy Metal Analyzer. These sophisticated instruments will provide the capability to monitor the environmental parameters at molecular level. The Laboratory is facilitated with Microbiology & Molecular Section; Environment parameters (Soil & Water) Section; Instrumentation Section; Safety Shower area; Record Room and Receptionist area. The laboratory is registered in GPCB authorized Common Biomedical Waste Treatment Facility (Reg. No. : GAN-02-05142) for Microbial/Biomedical Waste Management.

Microbiology and Molecular biology section

This section works on the study of plankton and molecular biology with the help of advanced instruments/equipments such as Fluorescence microscope, Trinocular microscopes, PCR and Electrophoresis etc. The laboratory staffs analyze the planktons from water samples which were collected from the wetland and estuaries. The results are recorded in the form of microscopic images for documentation and further identification.

Environmental parameters (Soil and Water) section

This section deals with the analysis of Water and Soil Parameters from different regions of coastal zone and wetland as well estuaries. The laboratory staff analyzes 25 water parameters and 15 Soil Parameters from water and soil samples. The staffs analyze approximately 100 water samples and 80 soil samples per month. The laboratory is well furnish with advanced instruments such as Automatic titrations, Multiparameter kit etc.

Sophisticated Advanced Instrumentation Section

In the instrumentation section, there are Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), TOC analyzer, GC, HPLC, AAS, Mercury Analyzer, Heavy Metal Analyzer and UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Recently, the laboratory procured Automated Solvent Extraction System and Rota-evaporator for processing of soil sample and analyzing Pesticides with the help of Gas Chromatograph. The laboratory detects Mercury from water sample by Mercury Analyser, the technique based on most sensitive Cold Vapour Atomic Fluorescence Spectrophotometry (CVAFS). Along with the projects, we are also commercially analyzes the samples from Industries and Academic Institutes.

SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) Section

The laboratory premise is facilitated with SEM (Zeiss, EVO-18) with EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy) software. This instrument built the capacity of GEER Foundation Laboratory in analysis of Plants, Planktons and other non-living samples with EDAX facility (elemental detection). It has four detectors with variable and extended pressure including STEM (Scanning with Transmission Electron Microscopy) detector. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) scans a sample with a focused electron beam and delivers the images with information about the samples’ topography and composition. The solid materials are observed at useful magnifications up to 100,000 X without the need for extensive sample preparation. The SEM section is facilitating with Sputter coater and Critical Point Dryer for liquid sample processing.

Glimpse of Field Stations Laboratories

The Five Field Stations are envisaged to collect samples from various sites of Gulf of Kachchh/Khambhat, Wetlands and Estuaries. These laboratories help to analyze the data & information for various sanctioned research activities. The regular biophysical monitoring of Gujarat coast and wetlands would provide valuable information for long term conservation of biodiversity and resources. The function of Field station laboratory is at the field base for all types of research and studies to be carried out in the Gulf of Kachchh & Khambhat, Wetlands and Estuaries. The Field Station laboratory staff analyzes 16 water parameters and 8 Soil Parameters which are mentioned below.
